This is a magnificent piece of antique Royal Crown Derby Imari porcelain. It is hard to believe that this piece was manufactured 130 years ago because it is so well preserved. There are no cracks or chips or even crazing of the glaze. Even the gilding appears to be in the original condition to the best of my estimation. There are no signs of any kind of utensil marks on it either so it makes one wonder whether it was ever used, or just admired for its artistry. It’s hard to imagine that this piece was any nicer on the day that it left the skilled artisan’s hands 130 years ago. This soup bowl was produced in 1887 according to the verifiable date cipher which appears below the maker’s mark on the back. There are several good websites which give the keys to deciphering the date codes. This is a very old and excellent piece and is not to be compared with similar pieces of more recent vintage. This particular piece has no pattern number on it but it matches what is designated as Pattern 495 which is a Gaudy Welsh Imari. At this early period, the pattern number was not being written on the back of each piece. The pattern features hand painted royal peonies in both red and cobalt blue. The rim was also decorated using a background of cobalt blue overlaid with red flowers and green leaves with delicate gilt trim. Close up photos of some of the peonies have been included to illustrate the detail and skillfulness of the hand painting. Antique pieces like this are produced by hand so there are subtle variations and imperfections from one piece to the next which makes each piece a one-of-a-kind. The bowl is approximately 10 inches in diameter and stands approximately 1-3/4 inches tall.
