Antique Royal Crown Derby Imari Serving Bowl, England, circa 1898
This item is an antique Royal Crown Derby Imari Serving Bowl with Two Handles, from England, circa 1898. The bowl stands 3 3/4″ (9.5cm) tall, is 10 1/4″ (26cm) in diameter across the top, and is 10 3/4 (27.5cm) diameter across the top with the handles. Hand-painted in a cobalt blue and rich red with lots of gold decoration, this bowl shows various geometric patterns layered with a floral design. Starting at a small base, the bowl gently flares out and finishes with ruffled edges along the top. Marked on the underside is the impressed, under-glaze Crown mark as well as the red over-glaze Royal Crown Derby with vertical’England’ mark. You can also see a date-cypher mark for 1898 and the number 46651. There is one curious thing about the markings on this bowl. Someone in the past 120 years tried to scratch out the above-glaze importers mark that was stamped just below the Royal Crown Derby mark. The ink is gone but when turned just so in the light I could read, “Burley & Co, Chicago”. The Burley & Co. Was a Chicago importer and retailer founded in 1884. I’m uncertain when they went out of business, but the last reference to them I could find was from 1917. This beautiful Imari serving bowl was manufactured in 1898. There is a faint mark next to the Burley & Co. Stamp that matches a code book mark used by Royal Crown Derby to designate the year’1898′. At some time, probably early in its life, this bowl was used as serving table ware; there are numerous tiny utensil marks in the bowl bottom. There are two small blemishes on this bowl. The first is a 1/2 crack inside the bowl that was glazed over in the factory. I believe the crack probably appeared during the second firing; the glaze sort of flows into the crack. The second issue is a small, dark scuff mark on the exterior of the bowl. There is also some wear to the gold rim along the flared edge. There are no chips, crazing or repairs on this bowl. Please see photos for details. So now here’s a little bit of the skinny on how the company obtained two royal warrants. The firm was known as’Derby Porcelain’ until 1773, when King George III allowed the company to use the word’Crown’ in their name. With the King’s blessing, the porcelain company became known as’Crown Derby’. Today Royal Crown Derby is owned by Kevin Oakes, the company’s former chief executive. They continue to produce luxury, functional, and decorative tableware and giftware. This firm is one of the last of the great British porcelain companies that still produces all it’s wares in England. This richly colored and intricately painted bowl would make a delightful addition to any collection of fine china! It would also be a great starter piece for the collector of tomorrow! The bowl is described as objectively as possible. If an item has a scratch or ding, I will tell you. All pictures are of item to be sent. Please inquire if you have any questions concerning an item.
