This beautiful, Bone china Coffee/Tea set for 8 people is made by Royal Crown Derby in their famous Mikado collection. The Mikado pattern was designed in 1894 by Royal Crown Derby’s art director, Thomas Amos Reed. It was inspired by rice paper drawings that he had obtained in the Far East. The original illustrations formed the basis of the scenes. With the exception of a few of the larger pieces, which are decorated with the complete design, all of the smaller items are decorated with a different chapter of the story. Variations of the legend associated with the pattern are many. Indeed, little imagination is needed to weave a tale with such romantic subjects as’Wandering Sad-Eyed Lover’,’The Tall Standing Pagodas of the Orient’,’The Flight of Cranes’, all set against a backdrop or rivers, mountains and delicate leaf tracery. The set is properly marked with Royal Crown Derby backstamp and the cipher. Different pieces may have different mark and ciphers. This amazing set is both Ageless and Timeless. 8 (eight) Coffee/Teacups – approx. 3″ in diameter at the rim and 2 3/8″ tall. 8 (eight) Saucer for the cups – approx. 5 1/2 in diameter. 1 (one) Coffee/tea pot – 9″ from the spout to the handle and 5 1/2″ tall to the tip of the lid. 1 (one) Creamer Jug – 2 7/8 tall to the tip of the spout. 1 (One) Sugar Bowl – 5 3/4″ from handle to handle and 3 1/2″ tall to the end of the lid. The set is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. It is possible to have some utensils marks and/or minor crazing that is consistent with the age. Exceptional collector’s piece. A splendid, if flawed, Royal Crown Derby coffee pot, circa 1930s, in the “Mikado Red” pattern. The Mikado is not only an operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan, it is also a historical title given to the emperor of Japan. The Mikado pattern was designed in 1894 by Thomas Amos Reed, Royal Crown Derby’s art director, and was inspired by rice paper drawings he had obtained in the Far East. (source: museantiques. The pattern, which dovetailed with a fascination in the West with all things Oriental, was originally produced in blue on a white background, and features vivid storytelling scenes. In ensuing years it was also reproduced in a multicolored version and monochrome varieties, and was retired in 1997, only to be resurrected by Royal Crown Derby in 2014 with the images rendered in white on solid colored backgrounds, seeming like a photographic negative of the original. This gorgeous Red Mikado coffee pot dates to, I believe, 1932 or thereabouts, based on the cipher at the base of the backstamp. The imagery is riotously lush, and forms a continuous portrait around the body of the pot, uninterrupted by either spout or handle. The details are mesmerizing. There is a little boy playing with a top while his tutor looks on. An older boy swings happily, as a heron sets his sights on a pool of water below, waiting for a fish to swim by. All is overhung by lush vegetation and flowering cherry blossoms, with chrysanthemums in abundance. This beautiful coffee pot is really quite a find. It stands 6 1/2 inches tall, and measures 7 1/4 inches wide including handle and spout, and is 3 1/4 inches deep. Now, on to the flaws in the spirit of full disclosure–as you have doubtless noticed, it is missing it’s lid. There is also a small chip at the tip of the spout. And, most importantly, while hidden from view on display, there are some fine cracks on the bottom, with an earlier patch of some sort in place. (see photos above for all these things). There are no visible cracks or crazing on the visible parts of the coffee pot.

The Royal Crown Derby Traditional Imari Coffee Pot set includes a coffee pot, creamer, and open sugar bowl, all made of porcelain with a multicolor Imari pattern. This vintage set was manufactured in England in the 1950s, featuring an Art Deco style and glossy finish. The backstamp indicates it is an original production by Royal Crown Derby, making it a unique and collectible addition to any tea and coffee pot collection. This is a large and lovely coffee pot in the rare, hard to find Carlton Red pattern by Royal Crown Derby. It measures almost 9 i inches tall and from spout to handle about 9 inches as well. It is in mint condition: free of any chips, cracks, crazing, utensil marks, paint loss, platinum loss or repair. All pieces are first quality and it is priced to sell today. The red cannot be found. The coffee pot is priced to sell today. This pattern is so very elegant, please see my other auctions for many more pieces, all in mint condition in this pattern.
